Understanding Amp Wire Gauge

But there is one part of the system that often gets overlooked until something goes wrong: the wiring. You can have the most expensive equipment in the world, but if your wiring is too thin, your system will never perform the way it was designed to.

What is AWG?

When you look at amp wire, you will see a number followed by "AWG," which stands for American Wire Gauge. This is where it gets a little confusing for beginners. In the world of wire, the smaller the number, the thicker the wire.

  • 14 AWG: Very thin, used for small electronics or signal wires.

Think of it like a water pipe. A tiny straw (14 AWG) can only move a little bit of water at a time. A massive fire hose (0 AWG) can move a huge amount of water all at once. If you try to force a fire hose's worth of water through a tiny straw, you're going to have a problem.

Amperage and the Enemy of Voltage Drop

To understand why wire thickness matters, you have to understand amperage and voltage drop. An amplifier pulls current (amperage) from your battery to create sound. The more power your amp needs, the more current it pulls.

As that electricity travels through the wire from your battery to your amp, it encounters resistance. Resistance is caused by the physical properties of the wire and the length of the run. When electricity fights through resistance, it creates heat, and that energy loss results in a drop in voltage. This is voltage drop.

If your battery is putting out 14.4 volts, but by the time that power travels through a thin, cheap wire to your amp, it has dropped to 12 volts, your amp is going to struggle. This leads to:

  • Loss of volume and punch.
  • Distortion during heavy bass hits.
  • Amplifiers that get extremely hot or shut down entirely.
