What are Coaxial Speakers?

Coaxial speakers are often called "all-in-one" speakers. In a coaxial design, the tweeter is built directly into the center of the woofer. This means all the different frequencies—the highs, the mids, and the lows—are coming from a single unit located in one spot.

These are a great choice if you want a straightforward upgrade. Because they are a single unit, they are much easier to swap into factory locations. If you are looking for a simple way to get more clarity than your stock speakers, a coaxial set is a solid way to go. Depending on your vehicle, you might need different sizes:

What are Component Speakers?

Component speakers are a different beast entirely. Instead of one unit, you get a separate woofer and a separate tweeter. Usually, these come with a crossover that tells the high frequencies to go to the tweeter and the lower frequencies to go to the woofer.

The big advantage here is the soundstage. Because the tweeter is a separate piece, you can mount it higher up, closer to ear level, rather than having it stuck down by your ankles in the door. This makes the music feel like it is coming from the dashboard in front of you, rather than from under your feet. This creates a much more realistic and clear listening experience.

Understanding the Specs: RMS and Sensitivity

When you are looking at these speakers, you will see numbers like RMS Wattage and Sensitivity (dB). These matter more than the "peak power" numbers you see on the boxes at big-box stores.

Sensitivity tells you how loud the speaker gets with a certain amount of power. A sensitivity of 90dB (which most of our DS18 gear features) is very efficient, meaning you get a lot of volume out of your amplifier without needing massive amounts of power.
